Energy Management

An important component of AMSC’s Energy Aggregation Program is an Energy Management Program. Participants will have contributed $1.5 Million (in trust) at the end of the current 5-year contract, targeted for delivering energy efficiency projects of an equivalent value. Golder Ecofys was recently selected as the successful service delivery provider for AMSC’s Energy Aggregation Program.

Municipalities have identified budget and capacity as the two biggest barriers to implementing energy efficiency initiatives. With Golder Ecofys, AMSC will be able to provide the best expertise across all participating municipalities who are managing like facilities in all jurisdictions. Benchmarking arenas or municipal offices or pumping stations across all of Alberta according to 5 different weather stations is already a reality. Analyzing the information and building the best toolbox for developing and gaining council support should not be a burden placed on limited staff who are already tasked with many different responsibilities. Energy efficiency is not high on municipal agendas due to the pressures brought on by infrastructure demands. But energy projects can also support sustainable planning by creating savings in other areas. If it can be measured and reported and demonstrated then it should become a reality.

Environmental stewardship is being embraced by Alberta’s youth, and municipal leaders are looked upon to ensure the right choices are being made. Energy management is a good step for municipalities to take both for budget and environmental savings. Through the expertise of Golder Ecofys and their staff, all members participating in AMSC’s Energy Aggregation Program should be able to demonstrate energy efficiency at some level.
