Umbrella liability insurance increases the total level of coverage provided by most of the other liability insurance policies in force (referred to as underlying policies) by a certain dollar amount. The umbrella policy limit selected should be high enough so that a member will have sufficient coverage to protect them for any foreseeable lawsuit that may be brought against them.
The umbrella liability policy provides identical coverage to the underlying policies on an excess (following form) basis. The core underlying liability covers are Commercial General Liability, automobile, garage automobile and non-owned automobile. Once the underlying limits have been exhausted, the umbrella policy drops down to pick up the remaining judgment amount subject to the umbrella policy limit.
